Water from the Main Line is connected to the Communication Pipes, which further supplies it to the consumer pipe, to the storage tanks.

The mains is divided into sections by the provision of sluice valves and other valves so that water may be shut off for repairs. The washout valve does not discharge directly into a drain, sewer, or into a manhole. A chamber is interposed for the washout to discharge into. The cover for the mains is at least 900mm under the roadways and 750 mm under the footpath. This cover is measured from the top of the pipe to the surface of the ground.
