Timber is defined as wood prepared for use in building and carpentry. Basically, timber or lumber is a wood or firewood of growing trees. Any wood capable of yielding a minimum dimensional size for construction purpose can be termed as a timber or lumber. It is a stage in the process of wood production. Timbers are used for the structural purpose. Finished timber is converted into standard sizes & then supplied for the industry.

Types of wood:

Wood is acknowledged as the most widely used material. While we could actually pick up any kind of wood to build our furniture or building, it is necessary to pick the right one for our needs. The most common product of forest is the wood that is used in the timber industry. It takes almost a year for a plant to evolve to a tree. However, the most common kind that becomes the tree is the angiosperms. Angiosperms are the group of plants that produce flowers and enclosed seeds. The gymnosperms category of plants is called trees (the ones that produce seeds that are uncovered such as the pine, spruce etc). The wood that is obtained from the angiosperms is called as the hardwood, it produces dense heavy wood due to their thick-walled, densely packed fiber cells and abundance of tracheids and vessel elements (water conducting tissue) while the ones obtained from the gymnosperms are called the softwood.
